The world of handheld gaming has witnessed significant advancements over the years, and one of the standout devices in gaming history is the Game Boy Advance SP. With two major iterations, the GBA SP 101 and GBA SP 001, gamers were treated to enhanced experiences and novel features. You can find out if you have a 001 or 101 by checking the sticker located on the back of the handheld. On the top left, you will read Model Number: AGS – 101 or AGS – 001. Often, these stickers are gone faded away from use and age. The AGS-101 was released in 3 colors and 2 special editions. (Pearl Pink, Pearl Blue, and Graphite). The limited editions are a Pokémon Pikachu and a SpongeBob SquarePants. These limited editions are hard to find OEM in these times as many people do use 3rd party shells to restore or upgrade a GBA.
Modern Screen Modifications:
There are many modification or “mod” kits available for Game Boy handheld systems. These mods can greatly improve the brightness of the screen on a Game Boy Advance handheld, however there are many collectors out there who prefer the originality of an original Game Boy. I, personally have a V2 backlit re-shelled GBA SP, however my Game Boy Color is completely OEM.
Screen Technology:

The GBA SP 001 featured a frontlit display, which was an improvement over the original Game Boy Advance but still had limitations in terms of visibility in various lighting conditions. This was partly due to the more power-efficient frontlit screen of the 001. However, the improved gaming experience offered by the backlit display on the 101 was often considered worth the trade-off for slightly reduced battery life. The more the console has to do, then the more battery life it takes, not unlike humans!

The GBA SP 101 had a slightly more refined and sleek appearance, with a smoother texture on the exterior shell. It also had a slightly smaller and lighter build, making it more comfortable to hold for extended gaming sessions.
Compatibility:
When it came to game compatibility, both the GBA SP 101 and 001 were largely the same. They could play the same library of Game Boy Advance games without any distinction. However, the enhanced screen quality of the GBA SP 101 brought new life to these classic titles, making them more enjoyable to play.

In terms of value and rarity, the GBA SP 101 tends to be more sought after by collectors and gamers alike. Its improved display technology and generally better gaming experience make it a desirable choice for those who want the best out of their handheld gaming sessions. As a result, the GBA SP 101 often commands a higher price on the second-hand market compared to the GBA SP 001. The rarity of the 101 version is not as high as you may think. These are fairly common and can be found on many online selling platforms.
